July is Sarcoma Awareness Month: Shining a Light on a Rare Cancer

At TrustBridge Care, we’re committed to not only providing compassionate domiciliary care but also supporting broader health awareness initiatives that impact our clients, families and communities. This July, we stand in solidarity with Sarcoma Awareness Month, helping to raise understanding of this rare and often overlooked form of cancer.

What is Sarcoma?

Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that develops in the body’s connective tissues, which include muscles, bones, nerves, cartilage, tendons and blood vessels. Unlike more common cancers, sarcomas can occur almost anywhere in the body and affect people of all ages. There are more than 100 different subtypes of sarcoma, broadly classified into soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas.

Because sarcomas are rare and can be difficult to diagnose early, raising awareness is critical.

Why is It Important to Raise Awareness?

Sarcoma accounts for just 1% of all cancer diagnoses, yet its impact is deeply felt by those affected. The rarity of the disease means:

  • It often goes undetected or misdiagnosed.
  • Research funding is limited compared to more common cancers.
  • Public knowledge is minimal, delaying early detection and support.

By spreading awareness, we empower individuals to recognize symptoms, advocate for themselves and seek early medical advice. Greater awareness also helps drive funding and support for ongoing research and better treatments.

What Can You Do to Learn More About Sarcoma?

Learning more is the first step toward making a difference. Here’s what you can do:

  • Visit trusted resources like Sarcoma UK, which offers comprehensive information about different types of sarcoma, treatment options, support services and personal stories.
  • Share information with your networks during Sarcoma Awareness Month using hashtags like #SarcomaAwarenessMonth.
  • Attend or support events hosted by sarcoma charities to contribute to fundraising and community support efforts.

How Can TrustBridge Care Support Those Living with Sarcoma?

At TrustBridge Care, we understand that living with or recovering from cancer requires not just medical care, but also day-to-day support, dignity and compassion. Our trained carers can assist sarcoma patients in several ways:

  • Assistance with daily tasks such as personal care, meal preparation and mobility support.
  • Post-treatment care during recovery periods at home, following surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.
  • Emotional support and companionship to reduce isolation and improve overall wellbeing.
  • Liaising with healthcare professionals to ensure continuity and coordination of care.

We are here to walk alongside individuals and their families with care plans tailored to their unique needs.
