Our Visit to the St James Centre – A Hub of Care, Community and Support

This week, two members of the TrustBridge Care team had the pleasure of visiting the St James Centre—a vital community hub in Derby offering care, education, and support to vulnerable or disabled children and adults. We were truly inspired by the incredible work taking place there and are excited to share what we learned.

What Is the St James Centre?

The St James Centre is more than just a day centre—it’s a place of safety, encouragement, and empowerment. It provides a welcoming environment where individuals of all ages and abilities can learn, play, and receive tailored care, depending on their specific needs. Whether it’s a child with additional needs or an adult with a disability, the centre’s inclusive and flexible approach ensures everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

What We Learned on Our Visit

We were impressed by the diverse range of services the St James Centre offers. Each initiative is designed to support both the individual and their wider family network:

  • Family Hub
Offers essential support to parents and carers of disabled children or adults—ensuring the whole family can thrive together.
  • Neuro Hub
Supports individuals who are pre- or post-diagnosis of being neuro-divergent, while also offering guidance to parents, carers and siblings of neuro-divergent children.
  • Roma Alliance Hub
Focuses on empowering the Roma and Eastern European communities in Derby, in partnership with the Roma Alliance Derby Partnership to develop more inclusive services.
  • Advice 4 All
A crucial resource offering guidance on housing, employment, benefits, health, debt and cost-of-living challenges.
  • Fun-Abil8Y
Designed for children and young people aged 3–18, this program helps build confidence, independence and social skills through fun and engaging activities.
  • Moving Forward
Aims to empower young adults aged 18+ with a wide range of disabilities to live their life to the fullest.

Each of these services is designed with compassion and flexibility, ensuring that individual needs are met holistically.

Looking Ahead: TrustBridge Care & St James Centre

It was clear from our visit that the St James Centre is working tirelessly to support those who need it most—and we are proud to begin partnering with them. One highlight we’re especially looking forward to is their monthly Family Fun Nights. These evenings are a chance for children to enjoy games and activities while giving parents and carers time to connect and unwind. TrustBridge will be attending the upcoming Family Fun Night on August 5th, to meet, interact and support the families and children in attendance, as well as having an opportunity to connect with the care workers of St James and offer our support.

TrustBridge Care has been in ongoing conversations with the St James Centre over recent months. Together, we are exploring how we can extend care into the home, supporting families who may need additional assistance beyond the centre’s services. We will be attending an upcoming Family Fun Night to meet more families, get involved, and share how we can help.
